PBS NewsHour Weekend - Italy's Olive Oil
More than a third of olive oil in the U.S. comes from Italy, a country that has maintained a longstanding reputation for quality. But the quantity of olive oil produced in the south of Italy has been in sharp decline. In the past, the Italian region of Puglia has produced nearly half of the country's olive oil, but a disease that has been attacking olive trees there is decimating the industry and has caused Italy to import olive oil for the first time. NewsHour Weekend Special Correspondent Christopher Livesay and videographer Alessandro Pavone traveled to ground zero of the epidemic, and caught up with a very special activist, actress Helen Mirren, in her fight to save Italy's olive trees.
