EPISODE 101: Freedy Johnston

Freedy Johnston is a singer-songwriter originally from Kinsley, Kansas. He moved to New York in the 1980’s and worked as an office temp for a few years before landing a deal with Bar None Records in Hoboken. His second record for them was his breakthrough album, 1992’s Can You Fly. He then signed to Elektra Records and in 1994 worked with producer Butch Vig on his biggest record, This Perfect World, which featured the radio hit “Bad Reputation”, and earned him Rolling Stone’s Songwriter of the Year award for 1994.
His songs were featured in the movies “Kingpin”, “Kicking and Screaming” and “Heavy”.
EPISODE 102: Maria the Mexican

Mexicana/Americana/indie blues rock/funk/soul fusion band – a true hybrid of Mexican folklore and rock ’n roll. Maria The Mexican is at times both an elegant and irreverent fusion of blues, soul, rock, folk, funk, social commentary and traditional Mexican music built on an expanding original catalog of songs delivered passionately in both Spanish and English.
The band is actually named for Maria and sister Teresa (Tess) Cuevas’ grandmother, Maria Teresa Alonzo Cuevas, a pioneer in Mariachi who in the 70s founded Mariachi Estrella, one of the first all-female Mariachi bands in the US. The band eventually performed for more than 30 years but tragedy struck Mariachi Estrella in 1981 when seven members were killed in the Hyatt Skywalk collapse in Kansas City.

Son Venezuela is a 2024 Kansas Music Hall of Fame Inductee

Their work combines motifs from Indigenous music, poetic works, & dance traditions to uplift critical topics in Indian Country like climate change & mental health.
Alex Kimball Williams, the artivist behind Bad Alaskan, released their first solo album, “Red & Black” in 2023.

EPISODE 107: Melissa Etheridge

World-famous 2 time Grammy- and Oscar-winning musician with eighteen recorded albums and over 30 years of success in music, advocacy and philanthropy
Etheridge stormed onto the American rock scene in 1988 with the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, which led to an appearance on the 1989 Grammy Awards show. Her popularity grew around such memorable originals as “Bring Me Some Water,” “No Souvenirs” and “Ain’t It Heavy,” for which she won a Grammy® in 1992. Etheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, Yes I Am (1993). The collection featured the massive hits, “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” a searing song of longing that brought Etheridge her second Grammy® Award for Best Female Rock Performance. In 1995, Etheridge issued her highest charting album, Your Little Secret, which was distinguished by the hit single, “I Want to Come Over.” Her astounding success that year led to Etheridge receiving the Songwriter of the Year honor at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996.
2024 saw Melissa release Melissa Etheridge: I’m Not Broken, a two-part docuseries (Paramount+) and accompanying live album. Recorded live within the grounds of the Topeka Correctional facility the album and two-part docuseries follows her journey both penning and performing an original song inspired by her correspondence with residents of the TCF and features raw and rousing versions of specially curated fan favorites and original songs.
